2001 Dodge Neon 3-speed auto as towed

Question. I know the 2001 Dodge Neon needs a lube pump for flat towing but for short distances (Say 5-10 miles max) can I just idle the engine in neutral? Reason.. I have the car now, but due to delay in tow bar will have to leave it at the dealer for 2 weeks.. I can have the dealer run it over to the hitch installer and pick it up in 2.5 weeks when I reeturn.. .But I'll need to tow it ONE TIME at city speeds (Below 45 mph)

Then, once I'm back, I'll put the pump on.

I wouldn't. What if a bounch/bump caused the shifter to engage to drive mode?

I've towed thousands of miles with the shifter in neutral of my Saturn and hit hundreds of bumps and it's always stayed in neutral. I don't think the engine running would make that more likely to happen, and even if it did it would cause no more harm than coasting down a hill in drive with the engine running, in other words no harm at all.
  • I've known several snowbirds that haul cars from Upstate NY to Florida and back using exactly that method. I do recall one of them had a wireless camera they placed in the car with a view of the dash for safety, but I don't see that as necessary for the short run you'll be making. As far as any concerns about it dropping into gear from a bump, it's no different than any other 4-down towed car, and I've never heard of it happening. The only difference between this method and the Remco pump will be the "overkill" HP you have turning the lube pump.
  • Your good with that. I have done it more than once with my 2000

  • You can do exactly as you proposed. Start the engine, put it in neutral and just tow it the short distance. My friend has towed his honda crv all the way across Nebraska with the engine idling. He had stopped at a rest stop and started the engine, ran it through the gears as prescribed by Honda for towing---but forgot to turn it off. So you can easily do it on purpose for a few miles. Good travels.
