With careful measuring and cutting, a flange can be added to the cutout for later re-installation. I did the external inline fuel pump mod on our previous 1995 F53 chassis coach, and that worked well for us. We were on the road at the time, and only losing a couple of hours to get the pump and install it was a big factor in deciding which way to go.
Hope I never have to do this but... are there pressure fittings that you had to deal with or was it just normal rubber fuel line and hose clamps ?
