2005 F-450 V10 Issues

If you have any misgivings about reliability of the engine, transmission, cooling system , fuel system and brakes, have the rig inspected by a trusted Ford mechanic and get itemized list of any repairs needed with parts and labor estimates. I'm curious about what caused the engine damage, was it malicious vandalism, forgetting to add oil after draining, ???. If engine change was done by competent shop, it should be good for many more miles.

There's a heat shield added by many coach manufacturers on the cat, and it's somewhat common for them to come lose and make a clearly identifiably metallic rattling noise particularly when you add a load on the engine or when it idles.

After ten years of this, I've yet to have any problems passing emissions testing, so I'll go out on a limb and say it's a benign issue.

When I read that my first thought was catalytic converter. Having experienced a back fire in one of my GM trucks ,it blew the converter ceramic inside loose. Since this engine ate a few pistons maybe it has the same issue. Presently experiencing a catalytic converter failure in my 08 Wrangler, it's ok until it gets hot then it rattles. Not sure what kind of noise a torque converter would make. Since it was an engine failure my thoughts are the cat. Look at it.

A misfire will damage catalytic converter 3 bad cylinders is a misfire. I'm sure was replaced with all other repairs.

More likely the heat shield on the catalytic converter.

I believe this was fixed too since it was 13K miles ago. We didn't hear anything test driving it, it was pretty quiet. We are going to see if we can get the previous owners information off some of the bills to call them.

I was wondering what a long block was. Thanks for all the replies so far.

Bill was a little over $7500. Parts were listed at $4775, labor $2125, sublet repairs $240 plus some misc stuff.

The only complaint I ever hear about the V10 is that they don't get very good fuel economy.

I think you will be good to go. Motor was replaced. V10s are great motors but something happened

they installed a new motor minus what is mentioned here. If the coach is priced fairly i would consider it. Sometimes engines fail. My 1986 K-5 blazer blew two pistons with 15k miles on it, it was a trade in that i purchased, GM installed a new short block and when i sold it it had 275k on that engine.
