I believe the flush is a hot flush...meaning a machine that heats the fluid and transfers old fluid out and pumps new fluid in. The heat is required as the 5 speed has a thermostat that opens at 165F-170F. If you drain pan and replace the filter, it will only remove about 7-8 qts of fluid.
As far as the recommended mileage for fluid changes, I amk not sure. 30K is not going to hurt anything. Here is more on the subject....
