40' Mandalay Class A

We met someone near us that has a 2007 Mandalay diesel pusher they need to sell. Medical problems has forced them to make this decision. The motorhome is 40' and has around 12,000 miles. We have not seen the motorhome; however, they said it was in excellent condition and has all the bells and whistles that were available In 2007. They just want someone to take over payments (around 90k left on payoff we think). We presently have a 2004 Newmar Kountry Star 38' gaser. We know nothing about the Mandalay brand except we think they were made by Thor? Would appreciate any info on the Mandalay or should we just stay with the Kountry Star (paid for).

Thanks for your reply,
John
  • We have a 2009 Mandalay 43A DP we bought used in 2015. There have been some minor wear-and-tear issues, but it's been a good rig. It has a full-wall slide, a large kitchen slide and a small master bedroom slide. The two larger slides are hydraulic while the bedroom slide is electric.

We don't have the ability to store it indoors yet, so we make sure it stays well-washed and -waxed.

You will undoubtedly hear from some naysayers, you will for every brand out there, but we're happy with the product.

  • Have some friends who have a Mandalay, about the same year. No major problems and they have taken it on several trips, including cross country. Theirs is about 42'.

Might look on PPL Motorhomes in TX and see what similar units are selling for. Also, "taking over payments" is as far as I know, an obsolete thing. You have to get your own financing. Might want to check that out. I understand they are trying to sell it for the balance owed.
  • We had a 39C 2006 model. Really liked it. No major issues. Be sure to check the tire dates. I did upgrade the TVs prior to trading it in as it still had the old bulky style. Overall, a good motorhome.
  • It looks like low book is around $85,000ish, high book is around $102,000ish.

IMO, for $90K I think there are better choices. I'm not knocking the Mandalay, I'm just saying for that kind of $$$ you may want to consider a few other options.

Older, less $$$, much higher end

My opinion is that unless the person made a HUGE down payment, taking over payments is usually not worth it.... (or if it was just recently (like 3-6 months) bought on a payment.
  • We have a 2008 Mandalay 40G and love it. We are the second owners. Every Mandalay owner we have met in our travels feel the same way. As with every RV there are small quirks here and there. Ours has the Cummins ISL 400 HP. We had a gas before this and it was our first RV. We made a list of everything that we wanted in our next RV and the Mandalay had it. One of the major items was the 2 speed Jake brake. Ours was on consignment when we bought it. Three weeks later the owner of the dealership called and said he had a customer that was will to give us a great profit if we sold it. Since it had everything in it that was on our list plus we just could not get rid of it.
The big question is what condition is it really in and are you willing to pay the price. We paid $135,900 4 years ago.

Not even sure of what model your talking, but no way, I'd give more than $75K or so, for their very top of the line and assuming that you really want that particular coach. Also would most likely be the best offer they are gonna get and even if they're apparently underwater on it's true value.
  • Bought our Mandalay used 4 yrs. ago and have not had one problem. Love, Love Love it !!!
