turbojimmy,
I have a real question, I'm not trying to be a smart a$$. Why is the clutch fan irrelevant at hwy speeds? Mine cycles on long grades and there is a noticeable drop in temp when it kicks in. It is new and was put in just a few weeks ago, the old one froze up on us in Indiana. My MoHo is Chevy based 454 also.
On edit, read about the filler tube and possible new radiator. I had mine recored rather than replaced, it was cheaper and according to the radiator shop owner the tanks were brass and not aluminum or plastic which seems to be the way they are going. Anyway, recoring takes care of the filler tube location, mine is extended too.
Thanks for the info - I'll have to look into having mine re-cored. It looks like Rock Auto has 2 versions available - one is plastic/aluminum. The other, for $80 more, is brass/copper. But - it probably would be cheaper to have mine re-cored. I hadn't thought about that. My dad is a CPA and one of his best clients owns a radiator shop. Duh - forgot all about that.
On the clutch fan - it's always been my understanding that they cut out at higher RPMs and speeds. I don't know exactly what the cross over point is, but it gets to a point where the fan actually becomes an obstruction. That is - the air moving through the radiator at speed is faster than the fan can pull. I could be all wet on that, though. Maybe I need a fan clutch? I only hear it briefly at low RPMs. I only heard it once at higher RPMs when it got hot going about 35 MPH. It cut out above that.
