Next time you get the thing started and it starts to stumble like that shoot a light mist of carb cleaner into the intake. If that straightens it out, then you know it's fuel related. If not, then back to electrical.
Don't rule out a vacuum leak either. What you have going on now could be so many different things that you're just going to have to eliminate them one at a time. Start with the cheap and easy stuff first then work your way back to the big buck high labor stuff.
Will do. Started with the fuel filter and it idled good for about 15 seconds and stumbled and died and now won't start again. Didn't think about spraying anything into the intake. I'll try that to see if it wants to start to rule out spark. I've got the tank almost down to pull the pump and sock. I'm not sure if it's ever been changed but the filter had been. The gas that came out of it looked brown.
Another question. The tank has been leaking under the straps. There is what looks like a sealing tape that isn't sticking and sealing anymore. There are what look like round spot welds that are seeping gas, 7 spots in all, all in a row right under the strap. Is there some kind of sealing tape or sealant that can be put over these spots to stop the leaks?
