FORD F53 ENGINE ISSUES

I have a 97 Fleetwood pace arrow vision. Ford F53 chassis. 460. 35,000 miles

For the first 10-20 miles is runs fine. Then it starts backfiring through the intake. I can't give it more than an 8th throttle or it starts bucking or bogs out and I can't go over 35 mph, and my fuel economy is non existent.

If I shut if off for a few minutes, it will run again for maybe 5 miles before doing in again, unless i wait hours for it to cool completely then I get the 10-20 miles.

Ive replaced the fuel pump and filters, the ignition control module, and coil. Set timing at 10° btdc with spout disconnected.

The tank is new, aluminum 100 gallon. And clean inside.

Im kinda lost so any help would be appreciated

  • Heat soak would generally take longer than 10-20min even in warm weather. Plus being fuel injected eliminates a lot of heat soak type issues.
suggest checking fuel pressure. Out a gauge on the test port and drive until she starts buckin and see if the fuel pressure is going down.
    just a suggestion.

  • sounds like you have covered most of the stuff, did you heck to make sure there are no fuel lines to close to the manifold? could be so maything, but at the same time not a lot.  you did the coil and ICm, what about the wires and plugs?  I would check the fuel lines, finish the tuneup with plugs and wires then see what happens as it starts getting way more involved after that

      Thanks.

I checked the wires. The plugs, cap, rotor and wires were replaced 2 years ago and have less then 6000 miles on them.

Ive never been this stumped in my life

to me it sounds like clasic heat soaking, which 460's are famous for as the fuel lines run pretty close to the exhaust manafold.  if you are confident it isn't that you could always try the go for a drive untill it does it and then take a peak down the carb to see if the fuel is boiling in the carb, asuming it is a carb motor.  if it is you might get away with one of thoes plastic spacers under the carb.  the one I had in  a old truck we ended up going to a electric fuel pump with a regulated return and secondary filter in it when it was starting to have thoes issues, as well as wraping the fuel lines in header wrap to keep the heat off them.  but even a vaccum leak could cause somthing like this so its one of thoes get it to where it is doing it and start wiggleing things to see if it goes away, then hope you can remember what you wiggled when it does 😂
