4x4 "expedition" campers are a rare and expensive breed. They are not for everybody, but those of us who own one would not have anything else.
Part of the cost is that they are generally aimed at extended dry camping as opposed to regular campsites with hookups. This can lead to bigger tanks, more solar, bigger batteries, and things like the Nature's Head. (We have one and love it.)
Ride quality will depend on the skills of the folks who did the 4x4 conversion.
Bad road abilities will depend on things like driver skill, driver skill, and driver skill. Beyond that, these beasts are heavy and so will have less floatation than a Jeep sized 4x4. Similarly, a locking rear axle is almost a must to make the 4x4 useful. (As are sand ladders and a good shovel.) Just remember, 4x4 just lets you get into a worse place to get stuck. (Friend of mine sank in the playa and it took a bulldozer, a back hoe, and four days to get out.)
