Is the "house" portion of a regular class C strong enough for the rigors of off road driving?
And that, my friend is THE question. The answer isn't straight forward, either.
My 4x4 C, at 24 feet, is still not an off-raod vehicle in the truest sense of things. If I were to take a run at a rocky, ugly hill like people do in short wheel based units like my '85 Suzuki or a CJ...it would just get all busted up inside. If I were to do many of things with my C that I can do with my Suzuki, it would be match sticks and broken china inside, probably the fidge/freezer out of it's spot and the suspended shelves on the floor.
These are first and fore-most Recreational Vehicles. They are NOT expedition MOGS or other such critters. They are the same RV with or without the four wheel drive capability. What they WILL do is get down the beach, thru the mud, across a stream bed if it's shallow enough, into those really cool camping spots that a standard RV just can't quite make it into. Even with great Rancho shocks and rear air suspension, mine is still a short wheel base and is a rough ride on pot hole-E, washboard roads. On mean ugly logging, mining, goat trails, I am slower than a TC, faster than a TT, and go places A's can only dream about and I get there with all the spacious room a C has.
Where I live, up in BC's north, come the early winter snowfall, I engage 4-high and cruise down the highway at a reasonable speed.
