50 ~ volts in door/doorframe, intermittently

Greetings friends,

I have a 2014 Coachmen Leprechaun C21QB with about 30K miles on it, and last week It began shocking folks at random in the door frame/door steps region. It's happened at 3 separate locations, so I know it's not a faulty ground at the power source. I wasn't there the first 3 times it happened, but I was out in it this past Friday turning things off and on with a polarity tester plugged into one of my GFI outlets, and a volt meter hooked up to the door frame and ground, and after about an hour of turning things off and on, breakers, lights, wiggling wires, inspecting connections, etc, all of the sudden my polarity tester was indicating an "open ground", so I looked at my multimeter that I had connected to my door frame and ground, and it was reading 50 volts. I began flipping breakers one by one to try to ID if it were isolated to a specific breaker/appliance, each time I'd flip a breaker from an appliance like the microwave, the volts would go from 50 to 40ish, then back up to 50 when I turned the breaker back on. I plugged the polarity tester into all of my outlets and they were all indicating "open ground". I then unplugged the whole RV from shore power and plugged it back in, and everything went back to normal, no more voltage in the door frame and no more "open ground" indicator on the polarity tester. I've been trying to repeat the process for the past 3 days and it hasn't happened again, but I know for a fact that somethings not right because it should never have 50v running through the doorframe. I've had 2 RV tech's trouble shoot it, and one licensed electrician, and it's still a mystery what was causing the issue. Keeping in mind, the RV wasn't having the voltage issue when the techs were troubleshooting, but they looked through everything that they believed may had been causing the issue and couldn't come up with anything. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Regarding the shore power cord and it's connections, there are no signs of any burnt marks/loose pins on the male end, and the I was with the electrician when he opened up the junction box that the shore power cord connects in, he pulled on everything and had a good look inside and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The one and only time that I was at/in my RV when it happened, I was in there with a polarity tester plugged in to one of my GFI outlets, and a multimeter grounded outside with the other lead stuck into my door frame. I was just chit chatting with my neighbor turning things off and on and discussing the possibilities for about an hour and all of the sudden I look at the polarity tester and it was reading "open ground", then I looked at the mulitmeter and it was showing 50v in the doorframe. I began turning breakers off and on and trying to isolate the problem, but then we unplugged the RV from shore power and plugged it back in to see what would happen and it went back to normal, no volts in the doorframe, no "open ground" reading on the polarity tester. I'm in there now doing the same thing in hopes that it will happen again. There was no district thing that I turned on or off that seemed to cause it to happen that I could tell.
  • Open the junction box where the shore power cord converts to the trailer wiring. Check each of the splices.
If your rig has an automatic transfer switch do the same.
Look closely at the 30 amp mail cod body. Look for any signs of dark discoloration. look at the base of each pin for any signs.
Open ground is more apt to be problem then a short between the ground and neutral.
  • Trace your shoreline cord and find where it is connected. Clean and tighten the wires there. IF, you can get it to act up then delicately take a measurement there instead of just tightening things. IF you see voltage on the ground connection you have the trouble spot. If you still cannot find the issue I would cut the connector off and install a new one as well as trimming the other end and reconnecting.
  • Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately for me, I'm afraid it's not going to be that simple. It's happened with and without the adapter. The ground coming in to the unit from the power source, and power cable has been confirmed as good to go. It's happened at 3 seperate power connections, both with and without the adapter. Each tech and the licensed electrician that has had a go at it all agree that there is a Neutral/ground issue. They seem to believe that the neutral is touching something it shouldn't be touching, causing the volts to travel through the frame (the RV door & door frame). Any other suggestions or does anyone out there know how to possibly troubleshoot or isolate the problem without it actually occurring? as in, when there isn't voltage passing through the door frame but all systems are on and in use?
  • Sounds like you have a problem with the ground connection.
Bumpy asked a good question as to what type of shore power.
edit: you answered question as I typed.
If you are using an adapter, look at it closely for burnt pins. If you see any replace the adapter.
