50 Amp plugged into Home

We just recently updated our 30amp 5th wheel to a 50 amp motorhome. We had an adapter on the 30 amp that allowed us to plug in the camper to a standard home receptacle. This allowed us to run a vacuum to clean our camper before we shut it down for the winter. The new camper has an adapter 50amp to 30amp with an adapter to plug into standard home outlet. Living in a small town, it takes several weeks to get a electrician to your home (we plan on putting in a correct outlet). In the mean time, can I use the adapters to do basic things like running a vacuum without causing any damage to the electrical system?
  • Thank you all so much for the help. I have always appreciated this site for my rv questions.

Pluggd into15 amps you can run a vacuum (You normally do soon a 15 amp circuit in the house) Televisions and the fridge(Though fridge and Vacuum at same time, depen ding on vacuum, may get you clicked off, no damage, just darkness)

The only thing likely to be damaged is your pride as you hike yet again into the house to re-set the breaker...

Air conditioners.. You MIGHT be able to run oneon 15 amps. but this is the device most likely to be damaged by trying if there is voltage drop.. It also will usually pop the breaker first however.
  • Your standard home outlet will be 20 or 15 amps. Anything plug in and run in your home will run in the RV when using adaptors to go from the 15/20 amp to 30 amp to 50 amp on your power cord.

When you'll get into trouble is if you try to run too many appliances or electrical devices at the same time in the RV or the air conditioner. To use the air conditioner you'll need a 30 or 50 amp outlet added.

Using your current home outlet you should be able to have the RV refrig running, lights, TV at the same time. The vacuum cleaner may push you over the 20 amp mark if all of these other devices are in use.
  • beetlebug,
You should be able to run anything in your coach that's not a major draw like A/C. We've ran the vacuum, the TV and VCR, as well as had the lights on and, since the Inverter/Charger is always active in charging batteries, it was doing it's thing too. But, like stated, depending on your house wiring, and what's on the same circuit in the house. So, yes you can do the same chores as you did in your previous RV.
