5500 Onan Diesel Gen 5.5 HDKBA

I have a problem, my generator will start up and then stop about 1-15 seconds later. I received codes 36 and then 45. I replaced oil, oil filter, air filter, and fuel filter to no avail. Fuel in tank shows more then 1/4 full of diesel. I put over a 1/2 of diesel 1st before I did all the above, I am beginning to think it maybe the diesel fuel gauge on my dash Any suggestions? Thanks. If I need to take it to Cummings for trouble shooting and repair approximately how much am I looking at for repairs? It has to be something simple (I hope).

  • Electric fuel pump is easy cheap repair if bought at O'Riellys or AutoZone. Symptoms you describe lead that way.

Fuel Pump (electric) Airtex E11020 EXACT replacement for Onan 149-2790 or 149-2692 $60-70

This is the pump used on all the bigger Onan diesels, assuming it is probably the same for a 5.5. Check it out. They have been known to fail at 50 hours or run for 2,000. I have replaced them every where in between. BTW Cummins will hit you for about $165 for the exact same pump with a Cummins label stuck over the Airtex number!!!
  • Ronfisherman, hello. Hope you have been fine. Yes, I have the downloaded the manual and did all the basics. Even though I had a 1/2 tank of fuel I am going to fill it up and try it again, now that I did all the maintenance. I have a little less then 1/2 tank of fuel. Thanks for the info. Take care, oh we moved back to San Diego area from Deming. Last year we did a 45 day cross country trip to the east and back.
  • Over on the Kodiak Chassis forum (linked in my signature) there is a manual for the QD5500. Some of the fixes are normal maintenance repairs. Others a big dollars. First item in repair list is make sure it has fuel.
