5500 Onan Diesel Gen 5.5 HDKBA Rotor/Stator

I am taking my Rv to have a dyno test done on the genny. I receive a code 45 and I am told it could be the Rotor or Stator that needs to be replace but that it is very very rare that both are ever replaced at the same time. Has anyone ever had either the rotor or stator replaced and how much were you hit for? I was going to take it to Cummings but they want $260.00 just for the dyno test, I called another shop I deal with and they referred me to a rv shop close by who are experts on generators. I read up on the reviews and seen nothing but positive remarks. Labor wise, the only difference is $5.00 an hour less. Thanks for any input,

  • cummins has a "Membership Club" for customers - JOIN IT, before they total out your bill, it will very likely save you money & pay for itself.

the club is $19.99 & saves you 10% on parts & service - as your service writer about the club before you pay or total out your bill - http://www.cumminspowerclub.com

I had a stator short in my 10KWQD - my cummins dealer bought back an electronic / control board (700 bucks, that did not resolve the problem)....pretty impressive that they took back electrical parts that were "non return".

they had my generator out, repaired, tuned & back in w/in the same day....the repair was expensive yes (but as you say you gotta do what you gotta do) and the coach is worthless w/out a generator imo.

the good thing is cummins warranties all their repairs (including service) for a year !
  • Well guys, I took my rv in to have my generator repaired. Well it was the rotor that went bad. The rotor got dirt in it and it make the genny work extra hard. When the mechanic, took the genny out and tried starting they seen that it was sparking because of the heavy dirt. So far it going to cost about $1600.00 and he still has to check the brushes... oh well. got to do what I have to do..
  • My then-new small Onan Microlite 2800 in the Tiger developed the dreaded 'starts, stops when the start button is released' symptom after only about 8 hours of use in late spring of '06. A supposedly good RV shop kept it for 3 weeks, then returned it with no fix. The Cummins-Onan distribution & service center in Spartanburg SC kept it for 2 weeks, but fixed it.

Yes, they had to replace the rotor & stator both. As I understand it, they only come in matched sets. I was glad it was under warranty when I saw the bill. It cost Onan just short of $1700! It had to go dack one more time after a few hours of use when I found that they hadn't tightened a screw on the governor arm fully; no charge. Then last year when I had it out I found that one of the isolation mounts hadn't been replaced when they reassembled it. I called, and they shipped it overnight with no argument or charge. Just guessing, they maybe knew the tech who had first worked on it wasn't the best.
