My then-new small Onan Microlite 2800 in the Tiger developed the dreaded 'starts, stops when the start button is released' symptom after only about 8 hours of use in late spring of '06. A supposedly good RV shop kept it for 3 weeks, then returned it with no fix. The Cummins-Onan distribution & service center in Spartanburg SC kept it for 2 weeks, but fixed it.
Yes, they had to replace the rotor & stator both. As I understand it, they only come in matched sets. I was glad it was under warranty when I saw the bill. It cost Onan just short of $1700! It had to go dack one more time after a few hours of use when I found that they hadn't tightened a screw on the governor arm fully; no charge. Then last year when I had it out I found that one of the isolation mounts hadn't been replaced when they reassembled it. I called, and they shipped it overnight with no argument or charge. Just guessing, they maybe knew the tech who had first worked on it wasn't the best.
