At higher elevations especially on hills, using less than 87 octane fuel in my first generation Ford F-53 V-10 lights the Check Engine Light every time just like it says it will in the factory owners manual. The engine runs normally without pinging though. Pulling the positive battery cable (for several minutes) on the chassis battery will clear the fault code (CEL goes out) but it will come on again as soon as I hit any sort of hill. It will continue to do so until I burn out the lower octane fuel and replace it with 87 octane minimum.
