97 Winnebago Adventurer P30 Auto Brake not quite fixed yet

I am a first time RV'er, and not long ago I first discovered what the Auto Brake was alongside the freeway. I was able to make it home, and chock the wheels. I searched the Internet to discover what had actually happened on the freeway. (burning smell)

So then I set off to fix it, with some great suggestions mostly from rv.net folks, and a lot of posts from oldusedbear.

This is what I have completed:
1) replaced the drum brake shoes (it holds the RV just great now)
2) replaced the rear transmission seal
3) replaced the rotten green switch
4) replaced the gray switch
5) replaced the parking brake pump with motor

This is my issue:
When I flip the switch in the coach to release the Auto Brake, it works. But then it makes a clicking/clunking/surging noise about every 5 seconds. It "seems" like it is sensing that it needs to pump more, or push the actuator more. Like it hasn't gone quite far enough to release it. I hold the braided line and I can feel it surging with each noise it makes.

One of oldusedbear's posts mentions an optimum 1.25 inches of travel. I have not adjusted the actuator bolt/cable after the work above, do I need to? (mine is traveling 1.5") Also, I believe the old parking brake pump with motor ran out of fluid, and I've read that you may need to bleed it after that. Do I need to bleed it? If yes, I can feel what I believe to be a rubber plug on top of the actuator, is the bleeder under that? (not much room, do I have to unbolt it?)

Thanks! I don't want to drive it and potentially ruin something else, but can't figure out what else is wrong.

  • Optimum means what it suggests, adjust. Sounds as if you may have some trapped air to bleed off.
