A Funny Problem With Our Stove

We have an on-going dilemma with our 2-burner Atwood stove. As shown here, the knobs get melted when my wife uses a large griddle.

My wife loves to cook using a large square griddle like this one.

Occasionally she will forget to use the larger grated burner with that griddle. The griddle over-hang funnels the heat right to the knobs.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, have you found a good solution?

  • Get taller knobs so the griddle won't balance on them and she will use the larger more stable burner. You could also glue something tall near the knobs so she will use the larger burner.
  • The problem is not that the griddle is too big, it is that the stove top is too small. :-) Get a new stovetop? Just kidding. Ebay advertises metal knobs that might work.
    Metal stove knob
But with metal knobs that can take the heat, you might have to be careful not to burn your fingers turning it off. Or try to find or make a silicone cover for the plastic knobs? I have a silicone mat that I use in the sink to insulate a 12 volt crock pot.
  • Here's a link to some knobs described as being made of metal, though they look like plastic to me. I'm assuming yours and these all have the standard "c"type female opening on the back. Markings may not match those on the knobs you already have. The other thing that would work is replacement bbq knobs, available at many Walmart/hardware stores..

    FYI:

Get ready for the porcelain finish around the burners on the stovetop to go next. That's another side effect of using pans that overlap burners by too great a distance.
  • How about placing several layers of aluminum foil over the control knob area to block the heat...kind of like you do with a pie crust to keep it from burning.

We carry a single portable electric burner and also have a single portable gas burner that uses the gas cannisters. These could be used when she wants to use the big griddle.

Yep, I am smarter than that.

I did call Atwood of which they suggested like bgum, a smaller griddle. That is NOT the solution I am looking for. I was hoping someone on the forum here found metal knobs. This way when my wife goes for the knob and it's dang hot, that would be her reminder to be cooking off the other burner. Short of that, we are working on knobs that will eventually resemble two wads of black chewing gum.

I figure when the instructional decal gets ugly enough, I'll remove it. Hopefully by then we'll remember which direction is "On" and which is "Off". You would think they'd stamp that into the steel instead of providing the arrows on a decal. I'd attempt stamping it myself except that our top is white porcelain coated.
  • Looking at the picture, that looks like one of those problems that you would never anticipate, until it happens! My dad would've taken the melted knobs off, and given the woman some needle nose pliers! You don't want to make a woman give up her favorite griddle!
