Bouttime, you really have a lot to think about and it will be exciting!
With all due respect to Newman Fulltimer, a 5th wheel with a truck would not be the 'automatic' best combo. The trucks are huge and if you have never towed a large trailer, it might be difficult to manage. Once parked, you have a huge vehicle as your 'touring' vehicle that can be hard to park in small towns. Class C's and Class A's are easy to manage and set up for camping and you don't have to exit the vehicle to use the potty.
Renting is a good idea. That is exactly what we did (three times, once per year over a 3 yr. period). We rented a 31 ft. class C Fleetwood Tioga with a Ford V-10. Drove well, had a separate bedroom in the back with a bunk over the driver area.
The second and third rentals were Fleetwood Expeditions, both 38 ft. diesels. The first one had 3 slides, the second had 4 slides.
I had always read when I was thinking of buying a RV is to buy your 3rd motorhome first. And, that's what we did. I thought seriously how we would use it and the rentals helped a lot. So, in January of 2007, we ordered our 2008 Monaco Dynasty with delivery in April 2007 and we have enjoyed it throughly. We ordered all the options we wanted so their were no regrets.
You didn't mention if you are alone or will have a companion, dogs, etc. We saw early on that having a tile living/kitchen area made a lot of sense.
We like to find an interesting area, find a nice RV park and then take our small tow vehicle out for touring. It gets great fuel mileage and is very easy to park.
Good luck,
MM.
