Hi and welcome to "the Life"
We are in our 3rd coach, two gassers and now the diesel. If you check my signature you will note we are in a 36 footer. This is our second 36 foot coach and our primary limit is the ability to turn it in our son's driveway. 40' will not fit!
That being said this is our home. We do not find ourselves cramped for space, or for storage. Truth be told we could have had the same coach in a 40 footer for relatively little more money, but the 36 besides fitting in our son's driveway gives us many more options in Public Campgrounds, especially in the northeast where there is less space and the cgs are older.
As they say YMMV we have been at this for 14 years and have driven well over 180,000 miles. Don't hesitate to PM me if you want to have an offline conversation.
