Doug, you are 100% correct! The step manufacturer said it was a diode in there, but to contact Winnebago to find out why. I called Winnebago and they said it was a diode to remove any possibility of step operations feeding 12 volts back into the ignition circuit when the ignition is off.
I get the diode, but still don't really understand the ground wire and its function. Need to take it apart and build a new one.
