Adding fluid to a Ford E40D transmission.

I have a 1994 Holiday Rambler with a Ford F53 chassis, 460 V8, and an E40D transmission. I understand that when I check the transmission fluid level the engine must be running, warmed up and I must shift through the gears if I’m to get an accurate dipstick reading. If it appears low on fluid, do I need to add fluid while the engine is still running? When I tried to add fluid with the engine turned off it simply backed up the dipstick tube and spilled out the top. I tried it again with the engine running and it seemed to take the fluid. My concern is I don’t want to over-fill it and have the transmission fluid foam and cause trouble.

  • Thanks for the input. I just wanted to make certain I was doing it correctly.

  • When adding fluid to any transmission, only add a cup at a time. Check fluid level after each cup. You will avoid overfilling doing it that way.
  • Check it with engine running and transmission in park, also try to be as level as possible.
If I add any fluid I do it with engine running and pour fluid in very slooowly.
