Advice on purchasing a used RV

We think we've found the new/used B we want, but it's a two-day drive from us so we're trying to check it out long-distance. It's a LTV Free Spirit with almost 80K miles. The CarFax report shows some early repairs, but nothing in the last few years the single owner had it. The price is just "ok" - we'll try to get them down more. We've heard from two members of this forum that the dealership is reputable, and the salesman said if we get home and something doesn't work that they'll pay to have it repaired here. A friend went to look at it today and said the coach looks very good, but it's winterized and wasn't plugged in so they couldn't check how everything works. We're having it inspected by the Freightliner service center tomorrow. Our major concern: it's been on the lot since 10/13! Is this an indicator that there's something wrong with it, or do some B's really sit on the lot for that long? Thanks for everyone's help!

Well, this one isn't the one for us. The inspection shows that it needs some major repairs, and the CarFax report shows that it had already had a couple of major things replaced. We think this might be a lemon, and so we're not going to pursue this one.
Will continue shopping - thanks for all your great advice!

Was thinking that. 2 years on a lot is an eternity. It's a dud. Surprised they didn't send it to auction yet.

All great advice - thanks! We'll definitely go see it before making a purchase. We're mostly concerned because it's been on their lot for 2 years - is this unusual?
They just put new tires on it last week.
How much below asking price do you think I should offer since it's end-of-year?

I would still check the date codes. The tires may not be as described by salesman. They may look great but be old and near end of life. RV tires specially Motor home tires age out not wear out. You can have a great looking tire that is so old it is a blowout looking for the worst place to happen
  • Part of the problem is the Class B used market has been upset with the rather inexpensive introduction of the Promaster Winnebago Travato that can be had brand new at nearly the same price as many used Sprinters.

  • we own 2007 a LTV freedom its a very small C love it. DO ALL THE POSTED ADVICE . its winter they wanna get it gone, your in the drivers seat , lower your offer,WHAT IS THE ASKING PRICE?? get on google and find out there selling price .ours has the I 5 diesel MB engine, and its been great, the dealer can put it inside his bldg and hook things up. TRUST NOTHING a sales person tells you if it ain,t on paper it don,t matter.remember the saleman job is to get every dollar he can out of you. let us know it turns out. OH! tires check date code ,tires are $150. ea
  • Why wont you spend a couple of days traveling to make sure the vehicle is in great shape.

I would go there and check it out. The contract you sign will most likely be an as is contract. The salesman's statement that " said if we get home and something doesn't work that they'll pay to have it repaired here" is pure BS unless in writing and signed by the owner of the dealership. In the contract somewhere it will state the terms cannot be changed.

CHECK IT OUT! Have your name and address etc on a card. Hand salesman card. Say the following " I am willing to pay $ ------ for the unit after it is shown all systems function." Make your offer reasonable not a dicker them down offer. Tell salesman to go to manager and talk about whatever they talk about. Inform him the answer from him is a yes/no answer. If yes you are willing to sign a contract today. If no you are leaving.

FOLLOW THROUGH with your promise either way. Even If your offer was reasonable they may try to dicker up. DO NOT DO IT. WALK OUT. They will call you. STAND FIRM. They will cave if your offer was reasonable.
  • It may be a reputable dealership but, get everything in writing that the salesman tells you.

I would have them dewinterize the unit so everything can be checked.
It's not difficult to winterize it, especially for a dealership.
