air conditioner placement

I have a four winds 29r class c. The roof ac is positioned right above the living area which means that one side blows directly in the overhead compartment and the other one blow3s out toward the bedroom. seems to me if I moved it back tp the next vent at least I cou7ld get some cooling on me and the noise level in the living area would be reduced. What you think and has anybody done it?

  • On my '11 Class C the Dometic Penguin (non ducted) has vents which can direct the air straight down. It has far more options of where the air is directed than my '05 Penguin on former RV. I don't know what roof air unit you have but perhaps a later interior panel could be retrofitted.

For me I find this "straight down" option useful for heating. It helps mix the air better than blowing it forward and back along the roofline.

In fact the ac is none vented. I should have stated that.
driving we are fine with the vehicle ac. It is when we are parked and sitting directly under the ac that we have a problem. I think the only way to dis is pull down the ceiling under the ac and see if I have to extend the wiring as you recommended. I will assume that if I have to extend it, I will have to use a junction box. Is that right, or can I just extend them?

    Feel for you.
My first TT had the mounted ac on the ceiling mid ship. It 'was' loud and you'd get blasted with cold are where it was located. Albeit you did stay cool!

My MH has ducted ac and it much more pleasant. BUT after one summer in Florida I think the mounted ac would have kept me cooler.

Good luck with your DYI project! :C

I don't think the OP has ducted air.

From your description you do 'not' have ducted air correct?
The air comes out directly from the ceiling mounted unit?

Either way IMHO, JMHO cutting holes in any RV roof is just begging for water leak problems I doubt your A/C unit is as small as the roof vent you want to move it to. And IMHO it will not be much more quieter.

You say it blows up in the cab over and you want it to blow on you instead. You mean while you are driving??
  • Moving is a******shoot - more cool air in the bedroom means less cool air in the main area and the noise difference is likely to be negligible. I usually close off the vents towards the cab over and use a small fan to circulate air back to the bedroom area.
  • Noise level often depends on resonance of the roof structure and your factory A/C vent opening might be better reinforced than some of the vent cutouts. My 29 foot Winnebago has five vent cutouts, mounts the A/C over the kitchen (almost central and closest vent to power supply).

The A/C is not very noisy where it is located, much noisier 10-15 feet away, particularly in the over-cab area. So I don't think you can make assumptions about the living area being quieter if you move the A/C five or ten feet.

Should you decide to move it, you have to work out the wiring, how you might extend (or shorten) it and reroute it within the roof.
