Analysis Paralysis...Class A vs 5th wheel for family

Ok, havent been on here in a while, but we keep going back and forth, going absolutely nowhere while the kids get older..want to get something this year for sure....need to pick, and appreciate input...

Heres our situation...4 young kids, oldest being 9. Probably have time for 2 week long trips in the summer, and up to 14 days or so around Christmas, plus the holiday weekends and a few extra long weekends here or there. Our kids love being outdoors, we have never owned our own camper before, but families had growing up. Would be mostly in the midwest, but want to make sure we can get around in the mountains should we choose to. I would visualize us for our week trips splitting them into a few stops of a couple days each.

Right now, we have pretty much ruled out a travel trailer, and our looking at going with a most likely gas Class A or a new F250 diesel and fiver. Here is the breakdown as I see it...

Class A - Nice view, great for travelling with kids...wife is a clean freak, our own bathroom, avoid numerous stops, snacks as needed, pullover if needed, access to all things while moving, kids play games etc. To me, this seems like the trip would be half the fun for the kids, and they are all not sitting on top of me in a crew cab.

Also, would think easy set up at camp grounds, auto level and bobs your uncle. Cost is a consideration, but something like a brand new Georgetown 351DS entry level, or maybe even a bit more and Winnie 35B or Tiffin 35QBA, something with bunks for the kids and maybe even a bunk over the front seats. This leaves us not really having to make any beds up either. Also, generator and ability to dry camp easy.

Bad part would be cant go anywhere without a toad, or driving a separate car for local trips until we make sure we are good at packing all we need. Im not sure I see any other cons with this unit, perhaps maintenance and tires.

5th wheel - This requires me to buy a new truck (45ish) and then the unit itself. We were thinking a Toy Hauler model with the electric queens in the back, figured that way we have some options with the room, and can move beds out of way when not needed, good space if we get a toy down the road.

Pros to this would be ability to unhook and have a vehicle to drive around with. The truck would be a daily driver as well. Can get with a generator but adds a bit to cost, overall probably the same total cost or maybe a little less depending on the models.

Trailers should store better as well in the winter, but then probably wouldnt take on a winter trip. Cheaper on insurance and plates? Not really sure here..

Cons - biggest concern is having 6 people in a crew cab truck on a trip. Kids can drive me nuts at that close range with stress of trailer adding. A bit longer set up time.

So long story short, from those of you in similar situations that maybe went one way vs the other...if you could do it again what would you do? Other suggestions? Its only money, right :)

  • My two cents:
Have traveled a lot coast to coast in the last few years. Haven't seen many motorhomes with large families. I'm sure there are some, but not nearly as many as enjoy camping in towables.
Heard a saying once. "A motorhome is comfortable to sleep 2, eat 4, and travel 6."
  • Another vote for considering a TT. With 4 kids, seems like it would behoove u to have a Vehicle available for an emergency. There are many quad bunk options available.
  • I do have a yukon xl with a 7800 ish tow rating, but my wife's vehicle. Really leaning away from towing with it, just not sure the TT accomplishes what we want and be able to tow it well with this vehicle. Haven't looked at payload either to make sure hitch weight not too much.
  • One thing that I considered was having an expensive moter/engine sitting around while not camping. Since I use my truck for work every day, my decision was easy.
  • I agree with willald about again considering a TT. You will also get in that cheaper than either an F250 with 5'er or a Class A.

If you have not camped with the 4 kids in an RV before, this would be a better way to find out if you really want to continue to do this.

AND....I would go used on the vehicle as well as the TT. That way, if you find that you DO enjoy it and it's something you want to continue, then you can upgrade the RV and tow vehicle OR one or the other.
  • ...I think you may have ruled out one option (TT) too soon.

If I was traveling with 4 children, there is only one way I would even consider RVing - A good size TT with a quad bunkhouse, and a 1 ton full size van (preferably a V10 Ford E350) for towing it. Gives you plenty of room for everyone when on the road, and an RV that gives everyone their own individual sleeping space. Something you will NOT get with that many children, in just about any Class A motorhome. A 5er could be had with plenty of room for everyone, but like you said, cramming 4 children and 2 adults in a crew cab pickup would not make for much fun on long trips.

We have two children, and traveled in a similar fashion for many, many years - a 34' bunkhouse TT and Ford Excursion tow vehicle. Worked great, we traveled all over the place in that rig, sometimes still miss it. Eventually ('bout 2 years ago) we traded up to a Class A (Georgetown 351ds - see signature). Works great for us and very glad we moved up to the A, but we only have two children. If we had 4, I almost certainly would have stayed with the TT.

Only motorhome I'd be happy in with that many people would be a custom built bus conversion built with enough sleeping space for everyone. However, that just ain't going to happen in this lifetime for a working stiff like me thats not independently wealthy. Soooo, like I said, if we had 4 children, we'd have stuck with the large SUV (or conversion van like I mentioned) and quad bunkhouse TT.

Thats my story/recommendation, and I'm sticking to it. :)
  • Thank you, forgot to mention likely renting if elect not to tow a car with the motorhome and a long stay, or other situations. Not sure how big of a pain that would be if I had to rent a car once or twice.

Another thought was an emergency with the kids....if all set up, time consuming to break camp and head out without a vehicle. This is a big factor for us, as with kids, as careful as we are, it is likely at some point.

Good comments so far, wife is undecided as i am, we both see good and bad.
  • Couple observations..if you're doing 2 weeks in a motorhome without a car along you'd have to consider renting a car once you get there. How would you get groceries, an occasional restaurant meal, or even go siteseeing. Sitting in the campground for 2 weeks would get old fast.

The other is with a motorhome it is very unsafe to have people walking around at will. They will need to be belted in so make sure the motorhome has enough belts.

    Good luck with your decision.
  • Taking a second car for those short local trips should not be a problem. Not having a car for the week long trips or the two weeks around Christmas could be a problem depending on where you go. Some of us rent a car if we go someplace where one will be needed (if available). You can also rent a tow dolly until you know for sure if you want to spend the money to buy one or get a car you can tow 4 down.

6 in a truck. Think hard.
  • You definitely covered the pros and cons of each. I think your deciding factor will be if you want to be mobile with a truck, potential for a daily driver, and park the camper. Or discipline yourself to pack everything so you never have to break camp and limit the campers use to a few times a year. Comfort vs Cost, Space vs usability??

Let me ask you this .... If you had no kids, nada, none! which would YOU choose? Let that be your deciding factor. The kids will go along for the "ride" no matter what you choose. Get what works best for YOU! (Also more important, whatever opinion your wife has ... do it and save yourself the agony!)
