Depends on how hard the water is in your area. Harder the water, the faster the anode will deteriorate.

well, I empty my water tank every time I come home so how many times do I check mine, too many times to count.

At least twice a year for opening and closing of camping season, more often if we go south to TX or AZ during the winter which requires de-winterizing /re-winterizing each trip. Only had to replace anode once in 6 years of heavy use.
