Are fivers roomier than a motorhome

I've seen a few comments recently from members saying that they went back to a fiver because it has more room. I don't understand as we've owned 4. Based our last two at 40' and our now new MH at almost 42' - our motorhome is much more roomier than the fivers. Mainly because of the two opposing slides. Storage in the MH is tons more.

That's part of the reason we bought our MH is it's roomier. The last two fivers had 4 slides and 3 slides. The MH has 3. Am I missing something?

I do not know of any fivers that are "wide body", meaning 102" exterior width that is common on most Class A coaches. The fivers have the slides that can expand them but you are starting with a narrower trailer to begin with.

Jayco Pinnacle was the first I found. I know keystone makes a wide body TT, and they must make one in a Fifth Wheel. The high end ones seem to have them available. BUT, they are not legal to tow in all 50 states (per the tow law guides)

Just looked at the Jayco Pinnacle website and they give the exterior width at 96". Jayco Pinnacle

  • Also on many 5ers you can get bigger slides as in a motorhome with the slides closed, you still have to be able to move around the entire motorhome with reasonable comfort. I have walked into 5ers on the dealers lot with the slides closed where you could not get into the livingroom area as the slides blocked it off as they were so large.
  • A 40' x 8' box is the same whether it's a 5er or a DP. They can both have the same extra footage in slides. Where a 5er can seem larger may be in sleeping accommodations in the toy haulers. You can sleep ten people in them, then when you take the toys out, you have a large rear play area for the kids if it's raining out, and the fold down tail can make a nice deck. It all comes down to which floor plan works better for you.

We have a 39' DP with three slides and chose it over a 5er. We're happy and will keep it. I do believe the MH is faster to set up and break down, especially in bad weather. Our Jeep is faster to un-hook or re-hookup than a truck.

  • If you compare the actual useable square footage of a MH and a 5ver with the same length and the same sized and number of slideouts the 5ver will have more square footage.

Here's why, the MH has from 1 foot to up to 3 feet of dash area.

As others have pointed out it depends on the floorplan layout as to whether the RV has or feels like it has more room.

For example the Safari line of MHs were designed with large walk way areas, extra room in the bathroom. The owner of the company was a big guy and wanted his MHs to provide plenty of room with no bottleneck areas (areas where two people couldn't pass each other). So when compared with other MHs the Safari seemed roomier and yet the square footage was the same as like sized MHs from other manufacturers.
  • Be happy with what you have.

Focus on the scenery, hiking etc.

Obsessing about nuances between a 5er and a mh is silly

    Just enjoy RVing

  • My last 5th Wheel was definitely more "roomy" than my current DP. There are just too many floor plans one vs another 5ver vs MH. We intentionally switched to a smaller DP for the convenience of driving in the same living space and getting into smaller spots. RV's sometimes become like homes. We start to carry more things than we need. We started taking the minimalist approach and only take what we need to save space and weight.
  • I've noticed those of us that have class A's can set up faster and unsetup? faster than 5vers. We really like our floor plan. We met a couple in Portland, OR that had purchased a 5ver with a FRONT living room...cool! On any RV I believe floor plan is first and foremost. What ever flicks your bick. Also traveling, DW can make me a snack or drink without stopping. And bathroom usage is much more convenient especially for those not driving.
  • It all depends on the motorhome and the 5er. A 40 foot 5er with three slides will have more room than a 40 foot Class A with 2 slides. On Storage I've seen 5ers with lots more storage than I have. But I haven't seen 5ers with more storage than a Bus conversion that has all the huge bays underneath. So yes you can get a Class A with more space and more storage, but if you compare the dollars you'll likely be paying a lot more for that space and storage.
