It takes 13 kWh to fully charge the battery from empty so at $0.12/kWh the cost to charge is $1.56. You can go 40 miles on that charge. So it’s like driving a 40 mpg car, if gas was $1.56 per gallon. At $3.50 per gallon it’s like a car that gets 90 mpg.
Pure electrics (Nissan Leaf, etc.) are even more efficient because they don’t have the weight of the engine as well.
I just use the charger included with car which plugs into a regular 15 or 20A outlet. It charges while I’m sleeping. For a pure electric car you’d want a 220V charger. You can buy them for about $400 now. They need a 30A circuit. If you have a dryer or welder outlet in the garage you can use that.
