This message thread has got me thinking. If fuel costs double or triple over the next decade, as they seem likely to do, that will have a huge impact on "RV culture". RVing, and motor-touring in general, will no longer be easily accessible to typical american middle class retirees. It will become even more of a luxury item for a limited number of people. This could have a significant impact on they types of vehicles manufactured, campgrounds etc. I think we'll see more full season campgrounds nearer to population centers, where people park and store their trailers year-round. And we'll see more upscale campgrounds for those who can afford to travel and have the cash and expectation of enhanced amenities.
I certainly agree it will change. I doubt it will go away. RV's will just get smaller to fit a more sustainable, affordable lifestyle. Look no farther than Europe to see the future. Maybe Australia is a better indicator, I don't know.
It's curious the responses. So few are even open to the idea of going smaller - it's either their ginormous RV or nothing. Maybe it's generational - the baby boomers and those that follow may be more open to it.
