  • Sometimes going downtown >10am and popping out I-20 can be good but the I-75 / I-85 "connector" can start backing up early afternoon (>2pm). If you go that route start getting over when you see Edgewood and Capitol Ave. I-20 E & W share the same exit. Stay in the left lane of the exit for I-20 E.

    I-285 shouldn't be bad until . . . . hmmm, same 2pm where it might get a little backed up at I-85.

    After 3pm you're hosed everywhere.

Been there, did that for 19 years.

I believe most have found that going straight through on I-75 is easier than taking 285 as long as you are not going through during rush hour. Through trucks are not supposed to go through on I-75 so I-285 traffic is heavy with trucks.

    Truth here^^^
  • East of Atlanta is a big area. If we new a location we might be able to help a little more.

I recently visited Atlanta .. Headed in on I-85 during the day, went to the Expo Center on the south side (RV show) stayed a bit too long and hit RUSH HOUR on the way back.. From my friend Ray's house in Buford. to the center 45 minutes good roads and light traffic all the way (This was on a Friday) time about NOON.

    Return trip over 2 hours.

Yes, 285 is a bypass, but pretty sure that's not what you are asking. Unfortunately there is not a better way of getting around Atlanta. Try and get to 285 after 10AM and tune 750 AM for traffic reports.
