Averages

I'm in a Class B, so keeping up with traffic on the Interstates or winding rural roads isn't a problem, but I still keep it to around 350 miles a day. A little less or more if there is a better place to stop that way. Most of my trips are shorter than that, so far, except for going to Florida for spring training. Did push it once, doing about 570 miles to get back home, but my back bothered me for weeks, so I've been cautious since then. There are a lot of different ways to do this, so go with what works for you.

Depends on whether you are retired or not. Some people are happy covering 200 or more miles a day, day after day. When we full timed, we soon found that we did not want to average more than 50 miles a day. That means, drive 200 miles and stay 4 days or "big picture" - - no more than 1500 miles a month. But, like so many things in life, "different strokes for different folks".

We travel from SE GA to SW NJ (about 810 miles) 4 to 6 times a year, 2 with the motorhome, the rest in the car. I generally drive the entire trip in one shot. Depending on which vehicle we are driving, how many stops we have to make (meals and potty breaks) and how much traffic there is, it takes us anywhere from 11.5 hours to 15 hours. By myself with no meal breaks, one gas stop (5 - 10 max) and one potty break (5 min max), I usually do it in about 11.5 hours with no traffic.

How tired I am at the end of the day depends on when we leave. With the car, we generally leave around 3:00 am and get there around 3 pm. I am usually fine for another 5 - 7 hours. In the motorhome, we usually leave 9 am and get there around 11 pm. I'm usually tired, but not exhausted. I'll be in bed by midnight or so.

Our motorhome handles great. No white knuckle driving for me. I am also in my early 40's and I enjoy traffic free driving. The most miles driving the Motorhome in one shot was 900 miles.

I gave been retired for 23 years and am now alone. I have had my Roadtrek for 3 summers now and have still not eaten in it. I eat before stopping in a CG. I did make 650 miles a few weeks ago because I didn't want t stop in Chicago but that was an exception. It is lonely with no one to share the scenery with after 55 years with DW.

We are retired too and wont be on a strick timelibe. Thank you all for the input.

I have to agree with Naio, we go by hours rather than miles. Our main reason is that we don't like to spend too much time on the interstate. That is unless we want zoom though a state or area. Most of our traveling is on, what was once described to me by local man at a campground - the Red roads. It's the trip!

When we were young we would drive our car from Mich to Disney non stop. We were kids then compared to now. I did have a little of that mentality when we retired and started to snowbird. Now we do about 200 a day and try to never drive in the rain and never ever want to set up in the dark. One day I didn't tell my DW how far we were going and drove from St George to Overton Nv 78 miles. She said that's it for today, I LIKE that!

An older friend we had met on the road said he was going from town A to town B one day. I looked at the map later and laughed because it was only 50 miles but I have now come to see how that would be just fine.

I am retired. My ideal traveling day is 300 miles or less than 7 hours. This includes fuel and lunch stops. On the road by 7 to 8am.
First day of travel starting a trip may get upwards of 500 miles. Mostly from excitement of the trip and to get away from weather on our winter trips.
On our way home from AZ this year. We were just outside of St Louis, MO. An easy 500 miles with home at end of trip. Should have been home by 4:00pm. But construction freeway closings and traffic jams ended with getting to our home at 7:00pm. Long day. Next day I was wasted. We have hookups at our home. Spent 2 more nights in MH before moving into house.
Be prepared for things that happen when traveling. Especially if your travels take you near large cities. Allow for travel delays.
We never make reservations during a trip. But do make plans on where to stay. But that is not always a option if traveling during times when lots of other are doing the same thing.

I guess I'd aim for 8 hours or less a day of driving, but might consider a little more if needed to work things out. That means maybe 400-450 miles, I guess. As much as anything, I find the limiting factor is arriving at the destination campsite at a somewhat reasonable time (before dark and before my neighbors are trying to sleep and, preferably, before it's completely too late for supper).

In a car, I aim to keep it below about ten hours; much more than that and my driving skill (and safety) starts to take a rather alarming drop. The motorhome is a little bit more tiring to drive than a car.

I rather enjoy driving, truth be told. I have at times done a little driving over the night with the motorhome, stopping to snooze for a few hours here and there at rest areas or similar places. It's very convenient in that way to, like a snail, carry one's house about on one's back.

That said, that was one of our more aggressive trips. As geocachers and hot springers, many days might be 100 to 150 miles, depending on our objectives. We've had a few 0 mile days too....

You'll figure out what is comfortable for you. Start small - plan on 200 to 250 tops, then adjust from there.

Stop often, take lots of pics, take in the sights, enjoy the journey. You may be looking for adventure, and you might just find it! Some people try to avoid adventures, but the adventure finds them.
