Awning Anchors

I have been worried about going to bed at night and leaving my awning down, it is storm season and you never know when one might blow in. One of MH's here had their awning blown up over the roof earlier this spring, don't want it happening to me.
I went to the Dollar General store today and bought two of the screw in anchors, used for securing a dog to.. Took two of my 12 ft
tie down straps and put the hook on the roller shaft at each end of the awning tube, now my question is how tight should they be. I loosened the knob on the bar on the awning frame and just snugged them down just enough to make the fabric somewhat taunt. I figure any adjustments of the jacks, etc straps will have to be loosened and retightened. Any other suggestions.

x2, we spend all our waking hours outside when camping and the awning is a must.

  • What type of awning do you have? From what I read it sounds like you have the newer electric type awning by Dometic. The electric Dometic awning should not be tied down because it will cause the arms to bend permanently out of shape. I use some support poles below the area where the arms meet the roller and they work great. I keep my awning extended in strong winds and rain with no issues.

  • As far as I am concerned, awnings are a waste of time and money on RVs anyway. In the past 14 months, I think we had the awning out once, and it was only because someone asked me to put it out. I would not even have one on the coach, if given a choice!
  • We always put our awning back in. Only takes a few minutes, which could save a lot of headache. This is what happen to a friend of ours on the beach. His was anchor, strong wind, blew it up and OVER his 5th wheel. It did a lot more damage then just to the awning. Be safe and wise, spent the few minutes.
