Awnings are NOT meant to be used in rain. Some awnings you can lower or let down to shed excess water, but MOST are NOT to be used in rain. They are sun shades, NOT rain shades. Below is the warning for the Carefree awning your uncle has. The design of this special model awning is a 3 position awning. PRICE of the RV has no bearing on the safe parameters of using certain awnings. Doug
AWNING POSITION AND RAIN
When properly installed, the robust design of the Paramount allows the awning to
function as a cover for slide-out rooms, even in inclement weather.
When there is rainy weather, retract the awning to the slide-out position to keep
your room protected.
CAUTION
THE CAREFREE DIRECT RESPONSE SYSTEM IS A PREMIERE ELECTRONIC AUTO-RETRACT
SYSTEM THAT PROVIDES PROTECTION AGAINST ADVERSE ELEMENTS; BUT, NO AUTORETRACT
SYSTEM IS A GUARANTEE AGAINST SEVERE OR DESTRUCTIVE WEATHER; THE
EFFECTS OF WIND AND RAIN ON AN AWNING ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND MAY CAUSE
SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE AWNING AND/OR VEHICLE. IF WIND OR EXTENDED PERIODS OF
RAIN ARE EXPECTED, RETRACT THE AWNING TO THE SLIDE-OUT COVER POSITION OR TO
THE FULLY CLOSED POSITION IF THE ROOM IS RETRACTED.
