back up camera

on our last trip we were up to 8700' pass, after that I noticed that the back up cam had a fuzzy picture, after investigation there was water in the camera. ??

Today I tried to remove the camera to clean it, not so easy. the cover came off with 3 screws, but the camera is a bigger problem. There is no disconnect for the RG cable which disappears into the rear cap thru a big ball of sealant.

So I decide to clean the lens while installed, not so easy, the camera is held together with torque screws so tiny there is no tools to loosen them. ( Even in my jewelers kit)

Now I can't remove it, can't clean it, So I decide to use a bit of heat see if the water will evaporite and thus solve the fuzzy picture.

It worked, the water was gone, So I replace every thing seal it up with clear RTV.

I went out to see my work, and yep, the water is back after it cooled.

FRUSTRATING.
  • Tom/Barb,
I hesitate to say that yours "should" be like ours and most others. In that, yes, it IS removable from the coach. And YES, there is a connector only a foot, maybe two or three, down from the camera itself. That "big ball of sealant" is only to keep water from infiltrating between the front side of the camera to the backside and getting in between the rear cap of the coach and the interior walls.

Those cameras, monitors and cables are all sold separately or, as kits. And, folks would have a hard time with the install if they could not separate the components. So, if you did like I did, and that is, break that sealant all up and clean it out, you might be able to see the connection of that cable only a foot or so away from the backside of that camera. Below are pictures of what the cable connection of ours looked like when I pulled it through that hole in the rear cap so I could disassemble it and inspect the connection. Hope this helps some.

  • I had a side view camera get moisture inside it, and could not disassemble to get the moisture out. I just got a replacement from ebay. So far - so good.

Well Yeah, but how to fix, when you can't get it apart.
