Bad accident

Just saw the resultsof a bad motorhome accident south os Stephenville, TX on hwy 281. A very nicely painted older Prevost or bus conversion had gone off the highway and hit a very large tree on th e passenger side, causing a large limb, maybe 15 inches ormore in diameter to come off th e treeand through the roof about four feet behind the driver's side. No ambulances were on the scene, but firetruck and police were. I would be surprised if this is not a fatality accident from the looks of the passenger side. It was on a curve and I did not get any pics. Let's be careful out there, folks.
  • Here is a picture of the RF tire that they say MAY have caused the accident when it blew. It sort of looks like it shed most of the rubber tread and what is left is the under plys of rubber and fabric.

  • I agree...it appears the right front tire went and most likely yanked the steering wheel to the right. Driver lost control and rest is history. Too bad we'll never know the reason the tire blew altho it'll be determined due to the fatality. I wish a follow up story was available somewhere that would give us that info. Tire age will be looked at. Speed will be looked at. Weight will be looked at. Knowing the facts might just help someone else who thinks it's ok to push the limits.

BE ALERT at all times when driving these things. I find myself at times drifting away from the JOB of driving. Put the cruise control on and steer with one finger. Have to remind myself I'm working to keep us and everyone around me safe.

Tragic for both the driver AND the SIL.....Dennis
  • The owner and victim of this accident were from Weatherford, TX, which is only about 15 miles away from the accident site. It is important to be aware that bad things can happen close to your home and that you always have to be vigilant when driving a large vehicle.

I was thinking that. My dad always told me - though I never checked it out as fact - that most accidents occur close to home because you tend to let your guard down.
  • That tire is deteriorated all the way around, so I think it was driven with low air for some time before temperature made the rubber soft.
My conversion has 2 shinier wheel wells, meaning PO had to have at least 2 flats on it, but no damage to the body.
So don't get paranoid. Blown tire doesn't have to lead to accident.
Murphy law says it takes chain of at least 3 bad incidents to make bad accident.

Looks like deferred maintenance contributed to this wreck. A bus is much tougher than a class A but you still have to do regular maintenance.

    What deferred maintenance?
  • IF the tire deteriorated due riding with low air for some time, Tire Pressure Monitoring System would prevent the blow.
There is reason while the system become mandatory on all new vehicles of last few years.

It was a 1983 model. TPMS might have helped...but we're Monday morning quaterbacking at this point.
