Baltimore Tunnel etc.

We are in a 36ft Fleetwood Fiesta Class A with towed driving up from DC through Baltimore to Flemington, NJ..can we drive thjrough the tunnel or do we need to drive around Baltimire?

  • I have an all-electric coach. No propane. Can I use the tunnel? The way I read it, the answer is no, because of the width limit of 96 inches. If that is true, then propane or no propane makes no difference for any but very old coaches.
  • A ridiculous rule IMHO, but true.........

Simple answer is if the tank holds more than 2 gals or 10 pounds, you have to go around the west side, or use the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The controversy arises over the use of the propane. If the engine is powered by propane as its fuel source, then the restriction does not apply. If the propane is used for cooking and heating (which is typical in all RVs) you will need to take the long way around.
  • The Fort McHenry Tunnel (95) has the same restrictions as the Baltimore Tunnel (895):

"Vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using both the Fort McHenry and Baltimore Harbor Tunnels. For additional information regarding these restrictions, please call 410-537-1374."

The easiest way around is 695E to the Key Bridge. It is a toll bridge.
  • The one tunnel over by Sparrows Point just north of Baltimore, you can go through, been through there on a 40' DP with 26' enclosed behind.
Was expecting to get turned around, but all lanes were open north & coming back south on the return trip.

Dont know about the one over at Curtis Bay, but years ago it was RV turn around & no go through.

I know for sure (four years ago that is) the tunnel on I64 down to Norfolk VA is a required pull-off for inspectors to check you have the propane tanks valves closed. Have never pulled thru Baltimore Tunnel area...

Should be web site for this

  • No, have to go around. No propane in either tunnel.
