Bathroom Sink Fixture Replacement

Faucet has developed a leak and when I began looking for the source,
I found that the threaded stems and nuts, and especially the large
washers had rusted. Washers were crumbling and was unable to get
the nuts loose. Looks like I will have to pull the basin to put in
a new fixture. What type of material is used as a sealant under
the basin when replacing? Appreciate the help.

  • If the mounting nuts are rusted a Family Handyman Magazine tip is to use an oscillating saw (Dremel Multimax) to split the nuts which should make them easier to remove. May possibly need a Basin Wrench to reach up there in a tight space.
  • Most fixtures now come with a molded plastic sealing gasket to fit between the fixture and the lavatory so no other sealing is necessary. If your new one does not, use plumber's putty rolled and formed to fit under the outer lip, then clean off the putty that is squeezed out when you tighten the fixture down.
  • Are you sure you can't replace it in place? I have done so on a couple of units we have owned. It might be a tight squeeze to remove the old faucet but I contorted my self up underneath and was able to do so..

Found quality units that we liked at Home Depot and used Pex tubing and Shark-Bite fittings.
