While that might be true, the odds of having enough hydrogen gas accumulated around the battery to create more than a little POOF are somewhat less than being struck by lightening when the sky is clear.
YES, it is perfectly fine to connect directly to the posts.
Plugging in the charger last is a good idea.
One of my chargers won't work right if you don't do it that way.
Amazingly enough, it says that right in the instructions.
