"automatic" can mean different things. Often it means the charger turns off automatic when the battery is charged. And not necessarily turning back on when the battery is low. Verify operation before spending money.
If you must get a small charger I recommend Battery Tender brand as it stays on continuous float after charging the battery. 5 amp model should cover your needs.
Either way no harm to alternator etc.
Amp-L-Start is a great product and should actually work quite well.
