Battery wiring configuration

I plan on installing four house batteries as we do a bit of boon docking and the extra amp hours would be appreciated. I will be using 12v marine deep cycles as that is what fits the budget. to fit them where I want them I will have to do two side by side in two rows will this wiring configuration work to equalize the draw?

  • I think that people overstate the affect of wiring configuration versus battery balancing. Absolutes like you will charge one and discharge another are just incorrect. The wiring configuration is a second order affect. Yes it has some affect but it's not a major affect unless the wire size is very small.

Generally the internal resistance of the batteries is higher then the wiring resistance. This tends to balance things.

Here's a web site that talks about the internal resistance of lead acid batteries:

And another site the has a table for the resistance per foot of various sized wire.

I'm not saying to ignore wiring configuration, just keep it in perspective - it's a second order thing.
  • No, it won't. You will charge the top left and discharge the bottom right. The resistance of the cables and connections does matter. I will not go into the problems of paralleling banks right here and now.

Find someone that has the January 2012 issue of Family Motorcoaching (FMCA Magazine) and read "Balance of Power". You can read it on their website, but the magazine had diagrams.
