If I might ask you and your partner's age because in that length, most big double/queen beds will be over the front cab. Few will be main-floor-rear, and even those (like mine) are a bit challenging to get in and out from for a couple. HERE IS my model built on a Sprinter diesel chassis, but you won't find them yet in your price range.

I agree with the comments that if fuel efficiency is a high priority, you need to consider a Sprinter diesel chassis. But with $45,000 to work with, you will have a limited selection.

I've read where Winnebago has the highest percent of satisfied customers.

I think I've heard horror stories on both the Sprinter and the Ford F-53/E450 chassis. I've also heard a lot of good things and there are a lot of people with problem-free rigs.

As another idea, there are two new major chassis designs coming to our shores in the next year: The Fiat Ducato/Dodge ProMaster, and the Ford Transit.

The Ducato has a lot of engineering to be motorhome friendly. How easy it is serviced, who knows. However, there are a lot of European upfitters which make small class Cs on this platform. Hymer and Globecar come to mind.

If you can bide your time, I'd see what people come up with on these new chassis. They will have their teething problems, but will be very economical when it comes to fuel consumption.

One word of caution - the city fire department my son works for also runs ambulances. They are looking at new units and will not consider Ford. They recently had a Ford E450 chassis ambulance in the shop because it needed a new head gasket under warranty. It is a diesel. To change the head gasket, the shop had to lift the cab and ambulance box completely off the chassis. A small repair like that could become quite expensive if it were not under warranty. Don't know if that would be required with the gas engine, but it would not surprise me.

I'd put Lazy Daze, Leisure Travel Vans and Born Free in the same category. I'd put Coach House and Dynamax above them. I'd put Nexus just below the Lazy Daze category and possibly add Phoenix Cruiser and Winnebago to the Nexus category as well.

Everybody I've ever known who has had a Lazy Daze says that there isn't anything better. Call it the Foretravel of the Class C rigs. The say Lazy Daze is known for their excellent customer service. At least that is what numerous former Lazy Daze owners have told me. If I were in the market, that would be one on the top of the to look at list.

Fair call, I guess I don't want to spend more than $45,000 so realistically not looking for something perhaps in the 2004 - 2006 range.

I have had a look on various trader web sites and ebay which was helpful but not knowing the US make and models it was a little difficult.

I have been grateful foe the information so far, many thanks.
