None of the above routes that you have proposed seem very good. Your responder above has a good suggestion, though.
For an alternative, Mapquest.com routes this trip through Reno to Las Vegas, and then north again to St. George for 963 miles. You go south on I-5 to Weed, then cut over through Burney to Susanville and on into Reno. This is beautiful country, with many Forest Service campgrounds and a scenic State Park at Burney Falls (highly recommended). You could also take a jog over to Lassen National Park on the way. From Reno, Mapquest routes you to Fernley and then south via Hawthorne through the desert to Las Vegas. I personally would instead go south out of Reno on Hwy 395, taking the scenic route down the east side of the Sierras, crossing over the White Mountains (a very high, narrow, and steep pass, but you can camp and view the ancient Bristlecone Pines on the way) to join Hwy 95 north of LV at Lida Junction. Then south on Hwy 95 through Beatty to I-215 on the N. side of the LV valley, and on to I-15 north to St. George. PLEASE BE AWARE that it will be VERY HOT on the southernmost leg of any route you take, so be prepared. Good Luck and God Bless!
