I got bit for a $75 fee thanks to WA license plate recognition, although the Avis is the blame for the egregious amount. In town on business and driving back from Bangor to SEA-TAC. Lots of signs about a toll ahead, had my wallet out, no toll booth. I was perplexed but quickly forgot about it. Then I get a bill from Avis a week later that paid the toll (couple bucks) but there was a $25/day convenience charge since they paid the toll for me and once you pay one toll, it's $25 for each day of the rental. Dadgum if I didn't get bit in Dallas for the same thing.
Now, I admit this is on rental cars for the egregious fee but in neither WA or Dallas did signs say "No Cash Option, License Plate Photographed." Seattle I would have still been stuck but Dallas I could have gone around. Boston has that technology but clear signs for miles that the toll is cashless and requires either EZ-Pass or you'll get a bill in the mail for license plate photo, including out of state drivers.
- The technology is this case is good but need clear signs that cashless early enough for a driver to have time to reflect, safely move over, and exit.
