Bilstein vs Monroe shocks for F-53 chassis

I am a tad confused. I spoke with a motor home mechanic and was told that air bags truly are not necessary unless your rig is close or over weight. Then I was told by someone who put air bags on their motorhome that the installation made the coach handle better in the wind and on uneven road surfaces. Anyone have an idea which is remotely correct?
This coming spring I'm having my shocks and springs checked to see if new ones are warranted. This discussion on Monrow vs Bilstein has been quite informative.
