I am a tad confused. I spoke with a motor home mechanic and was told that air bags truly are not necessary unless your rig is close or over weight. Then I was told by someone who put air bags on their motorhome that the installation made the coach handle better in the wind and on uneven road surfaces. Anyone have an idea which is remotely correct?
This coming spring I'm having my shocks and springs checked to see if new ones are warranted. This discussion on Monrow vs Bilstein has been quite informative.
I added front and rear air bags to my WH chassis. This was NOT to increase the load carrying capacity. When the winds are blowing pretty hard, AND I am on a fairly smooth highway. I pump them up to about 80psi or so and the coach is very stable in high winds. I get no rocking or tail wag. Once the wind dies down, then I reduce the air down to 30psi, which returns the smoother ride. Since we travel a lot during the Winter months and throughout the Great Plains, high winds are more of the norm than the exception. For us it made sense for me to add the air bags, along with the dash controls to inflate or deflate them. It allows us to travel in much higher winds than before I added them, which in the Great Plains, can mean the difference between sitting in one location for days waiting for a break in the wind.
