Bird Strike...

This has become interesting...a few weeks ago, on my trip down to San Felipe, a large pigeon sized bird made a mistake and bashed right into the middle of my passenger side windshield. While I was traveling at 55 MPH.

It left a mark, but not in my line of sight so I didn't worry about it then. Plus it's not all that obvious, sort of a baseball sized ghostly mark. A few days later, tried washing it with soapy water. The mark wasn't impressed and stayed put. It's kind of sticky. Hmmm. Next I tried Awesome. Nothing. Still the same mark.

OK, brought out the big guns; WD40, Goo Be Gone, Carb cleaner Spray, no change. What is this bird made of??

Anyone have any idea what kind of bird leaves a sticky mark when it flies into your windshield?

At this point, not even sure I want to clean it off. Makes a conversation starter. I'm not even all that disappointed in those cleaning products, I'm impressed by the birds physiology.
  • Single edge razor blade and scrap at a very shallow angle followed by soap and water.
  • Well Jim,
This is kinda funny and or interesting. Glass is not penetrable, for the most part anyways. Can it be stained, well, yeah it can but, I would definitely think, NOT BY A BIRD STRIKE. Anyway, I've used actual rubbing compound and or polishing compound on my windshields in the past. There's zero damage and, in actuality, the glass is a tad smoother so, the wipers just sort of glide right over when it rains. But, if you can get your hands on some 3M rubbing compound, and a machine (not one of those cheesy random orbital $29.00 ones either), I'd bet the farm you'll lose that bird strike evidence.

  • Use 0000 steel wool to clean all sorts of stuff off of glass, including mineral deposits.
  • They used to use a carbide blade scraper on windows prior to installing the window film. You might try using a sharp blade to remove the residue.
