Just a thought, it would seem like the transmission would have gone out under 'too much weight' before the engine.
MM.
I have to agree with this one.
We pulled a ton over GCWR with our old gasser all over Rockies and Appalachia. The 7.4 Vortec, never missed a beat and could care less, but on long 6% grades in the heat of summer, the 4L80E GM Tranny, would go into limp mode if not careful. However, pulling it down into low and maintaining 25mph would keep it going over the top.
After one 7500 mile trip out west with this abuse, the tranny oil looked brownish, so drained what I could of around 4 - 6 qts, ran it for awhile and did it again. Maybe once more, before it looked and smelled good again. Don't think it ever had a complete change or the filter, either in it's 18yrs and certainly not in the 9yrs with our ownership. Sold the rig at over 90K miles, still running great with an excellent shifting tranny, as well. Always hate messing with a Tranny and better left alone, in many cases, just like with all our automobiles.
