Blown Engine, 8.1l

Leaving Townsend GA yesterday for Covington GA and a Ham Fest I did not make it.. Just north of Reidsville there was a BANG, and a lot of smoke, and the engine died as I coasted to the shoulder.

Upon hooking up we found a big hole in the oil pan.. Im thinking (Due to other things) engine likely blown but a lower overhaul at minimum.

I am now in a tow lot in METTER, GA

Anyone know of a repair shop near here that can do the job

2005 Damon Intruder 377W. Workhorse chassis, Front engine, 8.1L Vortec, gas, the local Chevy Dealer has not a bay big enough.

  • Maybe try a Jasper engine----they have a good warranty----or as others have said a new crate motor......junk yards sell junk some good some bad but it is still junk.
  • Based on experience, start shopping for a new/rebuilt complete engine. A hole such as that means that heavy pieces of metal were being knocked around inside the engine. If you are lucky, you may be able to save the heads. Do NOT attempt to save anything below them as you will be taking a large risk of a second failure.
  • I'd go for a crate engine if you find a place. May be a few $$$ more, but will be new. JMHO
  • Hi,

Sorry to hear about your bad engine. Hopefully it will be repaired and back on the road soon. I was thinking that they might take that engine out the bottom of the RV, so a large lift would be required, but not sure how it really is done.

I think that GM still sells the crate engines, I would be checking those prices instead of looking around the junkyards first. IF the crate motor is not that much, I would rather have it's warranty than to spend $2,000 in labor to install a questionable motor. You pretty much just need a stock GM crate engine rated for RV use, and they are fairly basic ones, though they also sell high performance engines in the $10,000 range with upgraded crank to rods and pistons rated for a supercharger. .

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • Statesboro is gonna be your best bet. See if you can find someone there who knows Statesboro shops. Quick search shows Franklin Chevrolet in Stateboro, open 9-5 today. 877-288-8137.
  • Sorry about your misfortune. Maybe this will help. RV service reviews
The only time I have heard of one of those engines going south was caused by a bad Mass flow sensor. Make sure that they don't just replace the bad parts but they find out what caused the problem. Good luck and I hope you can get back on the road soon. A hole in the oil pan is usually a thrown rod.
  • Sorry to hear of your trouble, that is no fun. Sounds like you are in for an engine replacement. I hope you get some help soon. Good luck!
