Blue Ridge Parkway and US 21 North Carolina

We are planning on heading down the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Cumberland Knob recreation area in North Carolina to US Hwy 21 and then taking that south to Statesville, North Carolina. We prefer to stay off the Interstates if possible, as we've found the secondary roads to be more scenic, historical and enjoyable.

Is this route compatible with our rig?..:h...we are 65' long with the toad and 13'1" high..I am experienced with mountain driving etc.....I welcome any comments...thanks...Dennis
  • You didn't ask about the Parkway, but with all the rain we've had there is a major crack right down the middle yellow line and they have a couple of miles closed off. Just Google it before you go.
  • US 21, down from the BRPwy can be handled without much problem, assuming of course you use the usual care in descending narrow, winding, mountain roads.

And, a bonus awaits if you're interested: NC's Stone Mt State Park is right along the route, just down from the Parkway. It has a modern, absolutely lovely RV park. Stone Mt, itself, is what geolgists call a 'pluton' -- it's a huge, dome-shaped, granite mountain, around the perimeter of which they've installed a very nice walking trail.

    Enjoy(!),
  • Thanks, everyone, for the input...we will be in Galax for awhile and probably take the toad over to cruise the area, then decide. Sounds like 77 is the better choice at this time...thanks again....Dennis
  • Just dug out my journal. We got off BRP at 21 a couple of years ago to visit a winery. We went north on 21, no big deal. Looking at going south on Google Maps in Satellite view it looks "interesting" for a couple of miles.

DW and I have taken several roads off the BRP over the years, some more "interesting" than others. This looks middling to me. Once I got on a road that became one lane dirt (two way!) after I was committed. Now that was interesting. DW reminds me about it often :) Took it real slow and ignored the protests of the driver behind me.

That being said, I'll repeat, I do not go on roads that are marked as no large trucks etc.
