Brake Problem

We had a problem yesterday. We were traveling to the Sierras from the Valley, towing for the first time (Jeep Patriot 3100 lbs). At approximately 3 miles from our destination. our brakes turn to mush, requiring pumping them to get them to work. I know there was a recall on brakes (2003 Pace Arrow) we told our mechanic about it a couple of years ago and he said that it would require taking everything apart to check them. He said that if we were not having any warning signs that we should be okay. We currently have a little over 13,000 miles on our rig.

We are going this morning to speak to a RV Service place here in Minden, NV to find out what they reccomend we do, (3 miles away from where we are staying, in Gardernerville, NV called Bob's Preformance Center). I suspect we will replace our brakes. We just had new tires put on a few days ago. The Truck Tire Center did not mention anything about our brakes looking bad, but maybe they weren't looking and we did not ask either. Any suggestions of what we might ask or request of the Service Center? Will the manufacturer cover the cost for the recall? Do all service centers preform recall work? Do you think that we can recover cost for the repair or replacement? If not, we are not willing to drive in the mountains with these brakes and will have them repaired at whatever the cost, just hope it can be as less expensive as possible. Your advice and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

  • We purchased this rig 2 years ago this month and are unsure if the recall was preformed. I suspect not, however in researching after we purchased the MH I saw that there was a recall on the brakes for our year MH. Is there some website or way to check if the recall was preformed on our rig? I am just concerned since this was our first time towing, if we did something wrong for the brakes to act up. We did not ride the brakes, only used them when necessary, to slow down on steep grades. We have not had a problem before traveling this route, ( Hwy 88) but we were not towing.
  • I'm not sure that I would ever trust a mechanic that told you not to worry about a factory recall, if you were not experiencing any problems. The recall work MUST be done at a Workhorse approved facility. Not every shop is approved for this work. I would call and ask if they are certified to do the WH recall and if they have the parts in stock. If continuing to drive the coach, instead of having the recall work done, has caused any additional damage, it will be your responsibility.
This recall has been in effect for over three years. Mine took less than 1 hour for the shop to replace ALL four calipers. No other work was required. If you do need additional parts, this may be a cost that you will have to pay.
